Autumn School 2021

The 4th International School in Interdisciplinary Computing Studies (ICS) 2021 hosts a variety of inspirational talks from two perspectives

  • First, state-of-the-art A.I. and Computer Science in academic research.
  • Second, an industry perspective on technological advances and possible career paths.
The event provides full lectures that aim at inspiring young academics for their scientific and/or entrepreneurial career, and fosters a lively exchange. Further, the event hosts student team presentations of the preceding hackathon, and the awarding ceremony for the best projects.

JESICS' 4th international ICS event is co-organized by the Institute of Cognitive Science at UOS, Osnabrück, Germany; and the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at KSIU, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

Join our Hackathon 2021 coding competition!

This year's hackathon topic is: Real-time Object Detection & Recognition via Contour Outlining using Computer Vision

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is an exciting coding challenge, where you team up and compete for several prizes. Your task is to develop an interesting idea for a real-world application, and program a prototype for it. Apply your programming skills, dive into the world of object tracking and show what you have learned!

Important dates:
15. July, 6 pm: Online introduction to the hackathon challenge & answer questions (Q&A session)
July - August: Self-learning Phase
2. - 23. September: Competition Phase

Members of the teams who pass the Self-learning and Competition phases will be invited to the JESICS Autumn School at King Salman International University (KSIU) in Sharm El-Sheikh (travel & accommodation are reimbursed!) Present your projects live and get valuable feedback by our international jury! Date: 3.-6. October

Register yourself here at JESICS ACADEMY to receive updates which will follow soon!
Enrol yourself in the Hackathon 2021 course via the Dashboard.
If you have questions, please contact jesics@sci.asu.edu.eg

Requirements:
  • Undergraduate student with a background in computer science, Senior year university students, Graduates of 2018/2019/2020/2021 … if you are unsure, just write us!
  • Commitment to learn and to challenge the competition
  • Good English language skills in speaking and writing
  • Subscribe to the JESICS ACADEMY platform and register for the Hackathon 2021 course

Hackathon team challenge:
  1. Self-learning Phase: Implement a toy project. Develop an idea how to extend it to a real world application
  2. Competition Phase: Implement your application idea to compete with other teams for a prize.

Why join?
You might want to join for one or more of the following reasons:
  • To invest in yourself, your time, your know-how, and your colleagues' skills via self-learning, group teaching, and team-working.
  • To get to know many talented colleagues and experts of your near or far future who share similar interests.
  • To receive a certificate of participation and a surprise gift with our project logo printed on it.
  • To receive future support and sponsorship of your presented prototype project until its completion.
  • To get in contact with national and international experts.
  • To win a prize, as best-winning teams (who present, at least, a working prototype) receive monetary prizes (each prize is for the whole team [not for an individual]. Prize rates are best approximations in EGP; the actual amounts depend on the exchange rate):  1st-rank: one prize (~10,000 LE), 2nd-rank: two prizes (~5,000 LE each), and 3rd-rank: four prizes (~2,000 LE each).
